Spoiler-free Review:

Rating: ★★★★½
Anger I know how to deal with, but this pain in my chest
is worse than anything the Uprising did to me,
and I don’t know how to heal from it.

The Invasion was a hell of an addition to The Union series. This book wasn’t all roses, but it was a hell of a ride.

The story picks up without a hitch, Evan is on a train to meet with her old boss, Tony, to share the story of the Uprising, and how they tried to destroy them. That is until the train is boarded by Uprising soldiers. It becomes clear that their attempt was a failure. Evan runs from the train, but is captured anyway.

Evan endures starvation, torture, and ultimately they break her down. They want Cyrus, and she will die before she gives him up, but she honestly doesn’t know where he is. He left her, and she still doesn’t know why or where he went.

The emotional turmoil both Evan and Cyrus were going through was hard to read. It was brutal, and my love for these characters made it even more heartbreaking. Cyrus, although completely torn apart internally over what he thinks happened, had no idea what was going on and he was trying to move on. But it just made me mad, how could he just throw away his devotion for Evan?!

The Invasion really brings out the best and worst in the characters. The turmoil is turned up and the stakes are life and death. But I still can’t help that I wanted to scream at the characters to “JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER!” Communication is so important, and half the time they never talk about what needs to be said! So much could be solved if they talk more and thankfully Evan and Cyrus do talk some things through when there is downtime. Of course there is a lot of character growth throughout the book for each and every character.

Don’t get me wrong, the romance is perfect. I mean absolute devotion. So many cute couples and love is a real motivating factor throughout the book. Love of friends, family, and partners. It is definitely an important theme, because love rules.

While love may rule many of their motivations, it is clear that greed and power is the ultimate motivation for the Uprising. So much corruption for what we think is for ultimate power over the world. I hate that those motivations feel so real at this time in the world, so I could totally see our own future turn into the Union and the Ruins. That’s what I love most about dystopian novels, you can feel the realness and possibilities.

To say I was surprised with the ending of this book, is not hyperbole. I really thought this was going to be the conclusion of the series, but I think there is more story to tell. The Uprising must fall! I love the world that Hernandez built and I am excited and can’t wait for more!
