First Lines Fridays: December 30th, 2016

For today’s FLF, I’m choosing a book that is probably very easy for most of you to guess. It’s a book from a series that Kelly has been bugging me to read for forever, and I finally caved.

About:

Each week we will pick a YA or NA book from our shelves and copy the first line, in an attempt to acquaint you with some new reads or reintroduce you to old favorites. We will have an accompanying Instagram pic to go along with our choices each week so check out #firstlinesfridays!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? If you want to join the meme be sure to check out Wandering Words, and here are her rules below.

The rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (or your current read) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
  • Finally…reveal the book!

Here is the first line:

The shutters swinging in the storm winds were the only sign of her entry.

It’s easy, right? I feel like everyone else in the world has read Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series. This first line comes from book two, Crown of Midnight. I loved Throne of Glass but thus far Crown of Midnight has drawn me in even more. I’m in agony over whether I’m Team Dorian or Team Chaol; I know which way I’m leaning but something keeps bringing me back to the other side. What I really love about the series is how visual it is, and how easily I can picture everything. If you haven’t read these books, you must!

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas

Publication:  August 27th, 2013; Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Purchase: Amazon

“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.
